Founded in 1998 by Thomas Fleurquin as an experimental mobile one-night party, Copenhagen Distortion has morphed into an enormous celebration of Copenhagen's street life, public spaces, and electronic underground. Spanning five frantic days, the festival migrates across different municipal districts before settling into its industrial rave climax.
The District Street Parties
The festival begins by turning classic Copenhagen residential districts into lively daytime street parties:
- Distortion Nørrebro: Hundreds of localized soundsystems hosted by neighborhood record stores, cultural hubs, and cafes across Dronning Louises Bro and Sankt Hans Torv.
- Distortion Vesterbro: Vibrant music, street basketball, open-air grills, and block parties taking over the hip Meatpacking District (Kødbyen) and surrounding avenues.
Distortion Ø: The Industrial Sanctuary at Refshaleøen
The culmination of Distortion is Distortion Ø, a dedicated 2-day electronic music festival hosted at the abandoned Burmeister & Wain shipyards on Refshaleøen. With multiple stages erected inside former shipbuilding warehouses, shipping containers, and along the harbor waterfront, Distortion Ø brings together the vanguard of international techno, house, ambient, and hyperpop artists.
